Below is some more in-depth information about cystinuria status in the Newfoundland and how it can affect puppies:

The DNA status of the individual dog can be:

Normal or Clear= Does not have the gene that causes cystinuria in the Newfoundland. This dog does not have, will not develop and cannot produce offspring that have cystinuria.

Carrier= Carries the mutated gene that causes cystinuria .Will not develop cystinuria but CAN produce a pup with cystinuria if bred to another carrier or an affected dog.

Affected= The dog has the gene that causes cystinuria and will eventually develop the disease. ALL puppies born to this dog will be either carriers of cystinuria or develop cystinuria themselves.

Note if you are also looking at other breeders:
When using a DNA carrier for breeding it can be bred to a DNA normal and there is no chance for the offspring to develop cystinuria, although they can be carriers themselves {carriers DO NOT develop cystinuria, although they have the ability to pass it on if bred to another carrier or an affected dog}

If using an affected dog, it MUST be bred to a normal ..this breeding will result in all of the puppies being carriers. Breeding to a carrier or an affected dog will result in at least some of the puppies having cystinuria.
(We would never use an affected dog, but sometimes other breeders decide to)

The IMPORTANT thing to know is the DNA status so affected dogs can be properly managed  in breeding programs

For your information we have included the genetic breeding outcomes for recessive inherited traits below:

Below is the genetic probability outcome when breeding cystinuria DNA tested dogs:

Normal to Normal= ALL of the puppies will be normal

Normal to Carrier= 1/2  of the pups will be normal and 1/2 will be carriers

Normal to Affected= ALL of the puppies will be carriers

Carrier to Carrier =
25% of the pups will be normal   50% will be carriers  25% will have cystinuria

Carrier to Affected = 1/2  of the pups will be carriers and 1/2 will have cystinuria

Affected to Affected= ALL of the pups will have cystinuria

We hope the little primer on genetics above helps you make an informed decision when choosing your breeder!!!!!
